The present invention relates generally to filter assemblies and, more particularly, to a flexible filter screen for covering an air intake opening.

Filtration assemblies are known in the art which can be used in conventional cooling towers and like structures. Normally, such filter assemblies are used for filtering particles from a coolant flow within the cooling tower.

U.S. Patent No. 3,298,672, issued to Fordyce and U.S. Patent No. 5,116,490, issued to Fontenot, both teach filtration devices for removing particles from a stream of liquid coolant in a cooling tower.

However, neither the above references or the technology currently available in the art teaches an effective filter assembly for protecting the air intake of such structures. For example, a cooling tower normally requires sizable air intakes which are prone to collect insects, cottonwood and other particles and which can hinder their operation.

In DE-A-3932357 there is described a basically conventional Venetian style window blind folded in concertina-style within a frame of U-shaped profile. The blind and frame are mounted within the interior of a room to prevent pollution and infectious particles passively entering the room when a window behind the blind is open. A pulley system is used, as with conventional Venetian blinds, to pull the blind up into its retracted position. In US-A-3695008 there is described a roller-strip filter for use in the interior of a building for protecting an opening in a wall of an air-conditioning system. Neither of these documents teaches or suggests an effective filter assembly for protecting the sizeable exterior active air intake openings of cooling towers and the like. There is therefore an outstanding need for a filter assembly capable of protecting such air intake openings.

According to the present invention there is provided a filtering assembly for protecting an air intake opening of an air intake system located on an external surface of a structure such as a cooling tower, a building louvre or an air handling unit, which filtering assembly is mounted in use to an external surface of the structure and comprises:

  • a flexible screen;
  • means for storing the screen attachable to the structure, which means comprises a container positioned at the base or side of the structure, which container has a bottom and a pair of side balls defining an open interior for receiving the screen and having a lid hingedly connected to one of the side walls, the lid being pivotable between an open and closed position so as to permit access to the interior of the container; and
  • means for advancing the flexible screen across the opening of the air intake system so as to raise the screen from within the container and cover the opening or to lower the screen into the container and uncover the opening, the means comprising at least one pulley mountable to the structure adjacent to the air intake opening, the pulley receiving at least one pull rope, with a first end of the pull rope connecting to the flexible screen and a second end of the pull rope being actable upon to advance the screen.

The present invention is a filtering assembly for protecting an air intake of a structure. A flexible screen is positioned to cover an opening of the air intake. The screen may have a top, a bottom, a first, side wall and a second side wall. A container is located at the base or side of the structure beneath or to the side of the intake opening and stores the flexible screen when not in use.

In a first preferred embodiment, a pair of pulleys are employed to selectively raise and lower the flexible screen. Pull ropes engage within the pulleys, with each pull rope having a first end attached to the flexible screen and a second end which can be acted upon by the user to selectively raise and lower the screen. A pair of cables extending parallel to each other may be provided in proximity to the first and second sides of the screen. O-rings may engage the cables and also engage eyelets formed along the edges of the sides of the screen so that the screen may be slidably guided during raising and lowering.

Reference will be made to the drawing in relation to the attached specification, wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, and in which:

  • Figure 1 is a perspective view of a first preferred embodiment of the filtering assembly of the present invention;
  • Figure 2 is a side view of the embodiment shown in Figure 1; and
  • Figure 3 is a sectional view of an O-ring for slidably securing the screen to one of the cables.

Referring to Figures 1-3, a preferred embodiment of the filtering assembly 10 of the present invention for covering an air intake is shown. The filtering assembly is capable of being used with any air intake system, but is preferably used with cooling towers, building louvers, air handling units and the like. For illustration, a cooling tower structure 2 is shown having an intake opening 4.

A flexible screen 12 is provided as the filtering element for the filter assembly 10. The screen 12 is constructed of a lightweight screening material and is preferably a polyester or wire mesh material. The screen 12 is preferably rectangular having a top 14, a bottom 16, a first side 18 and a second side 20. The screen 12 is particularly useful for filtering out cotton wood pollen, insects, leaves and the like prior to their being drawn into the air intake 4 of the cooling tower 2 or like structure.

A first pulley assembly 22 and a second pulley assembly 24 are shown for selectively raising and lowering the screen 12. The first pulley assembly 22 consists of a first pulley 26 mounted to the structure of the cooling tower 2 above the intake opening 4 which is engaged by a first pull rope 30. The second pulley assembly 24 likewise has a second pulley 28 mounted to the structure 2 a predetermined distance away from the first pulley 26 and which is engaged by a second pull rope 32. The first pull rope 30 has a first end 34 connected to the top 14 of the screen 12 and a second end 38 which is acted upon by an operator 42 for moving the screen. Likewise, the second pull rope 32 has a first end 36 connected to the top 14 of the screen 12 a predetermined distance away from the first rope 30 and a second end 40 which is also acted upon by an operator 44 for moving the screen. The first and second pulleys assemblies 22 and 24 can also be operated by a single user for selectively raising and lowering the screen 12. The second ends 38 and 40 of ropes 30 and 32 are each connected to a tie-down 39 once the screen is elevated to its desired position.

Referring again to Figures 1 and 3, a first cable 46 and a second cable 48 are attached to the cooling tower structure 2 and extend parallel to one another between the top and the bottom of the intake opening 4. Specifically, the cables 46 and 48 are attached at first ends to a bottom portion 6 of the structure 2 and at second ends to a top portion 8 of the structure 2. The cables 46 and 48 extend in close proximity and adjacent to the sides 18 and 20 of the flexible screen 12.

Pluralities of O-rings 50 surround the first and second cables 46 and 48. The O-rings are constructed of a durable lightweight metal or plastic and are capable of being opened and closed to encircle the cables 46 and 48. The O-rings 50 are also snappingly engaged within pluralities of eyelets 52 formed along the edges of the first side 18 and second side 20 of the screen 12. The eyelets 52 are constructed of metallic rings which surround holes formed in the sides 18 and 20 of the screen 12 and define annular spaces.

Referring again to Figure 3, a sectional view is shown of a portion the cable 46 and the manner in which the O-ring 50 engages the cable 46 and the eyelet 52 so as to slidably engage the screen 12 to the cables. As is clearly seen in Figure 1, this arrangement is identical for both cables 46 and 48. Therefore, the cables 46 and 48 guide the screen 12 as the screen is drawn upwards or downwards across the air intake opening 4.

Further referring to Figures 1 and 3, a first rigid elongated member 54 is provided and is slidably inserted within a sleeve 56 at the top 14 of the screen 12. The member 54 provides stability to the screen 12 at its top edge 14, this being particularly important when the screen 12 is raised and lowered by the pulley assemblies 22 and 24. Referring again to Figure 2, a second rigid elongated member 58 may also be inserted within a sleeve 60 at the bottom 16 of the screen 12. The second rigid member 58 also provides support to the screen 12 and stabilizes the screen at its bottom.

Referring again to Figures 1 and 3, a container 62 for storing the flexible screen 12 is secured to the cooling tower structure 2 at its lower portion 6. The container 62 has a bottom 64, a first side wall 66, a second side wall 68 and end walls 69 (see Figure 1) which define an open interior. A lid 70 is hingedly attached to the second side wall 68 and can be selectively opened and closed to reveal the inside of the container 62. As can be seen from Figure 1, the first and second cables 46 and 48 are secured to the lower portion 6 of the cooling tower structure within the defined interior of the container 62 to enable the screen 12 to be conveniently raised from or lowered within the container 62.

Accordingly, the screen 12 can be conveniently lowered and stored within the container 62 when it is desirable to gain access to the cooling tower intake 4. The screen 12 may further be conveniently disconnected from the pull ropes and pulleys when it is desired to clean or replace the screen 12. An additional screen, identical in all respects to screen 12, may also be kept in the container 62 and the pulley assemblies may be connected to the additional screen when it is desired to clean and/or replace the screen 12.

Referring again to Figure 2, a plurality of apertures 72 are formed along the bottom 64 of the container 62. The apertures 72 are preferably located so as not to overlie the bottom portion 6 of the cooling tower structure 2. The apertures drain moisture from the container 62 which can accumulate on the screen 12 when the screen is in use.

Accordingly, the present invention provides a novel and unique assembly for protecting the air intake of any desired structure. Having described my invention, additional embodiments will become apparent to those skill in the art to which it pertains. Specifically, the screen can be mounted so as to be advanced from side to side of the air intake opening, rather than from top to bottom as is shown in the drawings. Also, a plurality of screens can be used for covering a like plurality of intake openings arranged on a structure, such as is shown in Figure 1.

  1. Filteranordnung zum Schutz einer Lufteintrittsöffnung (4) eines Lufteintrittssystems, das sich an einer Außenfläche einer Struktur wie eines Kühlturms, einer Gebäudejalousie oder einer Luftführungseinheit befindet, wobei die Filteranordnung im Betrieb an der Außenfläche der Struktur befestigt ist und aufweist:
    • eine flexible Blende (12),
    • eine Einrichtung zur Lagerung der Blende, die an der Struktur befestigbar ist, wobei die Einrichtung einen Behälter (62) aufweist, der an der Basis bzw. Seite der Struktur angeordnet ist, der einen Boden und zwei Seitenwände hat, die einen offenen Innenraum zur Aufnahme der Blende bilden, und der einen Deckel (70) hat, der an einer der Seitenwände angelenkt ist und zwischen einer offenen und einer geschlossenen Position schwenkbar ist, um den Zugang zum Innenraum des Behälters zu ermöglichen, und
    • eine Einrichtung zum Verstellen der flexiblen Blende über die Öffnung des Lufteintrittssystems, um die Blende aus dem Behälter anzuheben und/oder die Blende in den Behälter abzusenken und die Öffnung abzudecken und freizugeben, wobei die Einrichtung wenigstens eine Seilscheibe (26) aufweist, die an der Struktur nahe der Lufteintrittsöffnung befestigbar ist und wenigstens ein Zugseil (30) aufnimmt, wobei ein erstes Ende (34) des Zugseils mit der flexiblen Blende verbunden und ein zweites Ende (38) des Zugseils zum Verstellen der Blende betätigbar ist.
  2. Filteranordnung nach Anspruch 1, bei der die wenigstens eine Seilscheibe zwei Seilscheiben (26, 28) umfaßt, die an gegenüberliegenden Enden der Lufteintrittsöffnung angeordnet sind, sowie zwei Zugseile (30, 32), die zum Verstelen der Blende an den Seilscheiben angreifen.
  3. Filteranordnung nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, bei der die flexible Blende eine allgemein rechteckige Form mit einem oberen Ende, einem unterem Ende, einer ersten Seite und einer zweiten Seite und außerdem eine starre Stange (54) hat, die mit dem oberen Ende der flexiblen Blende verbunden ist, und das Zugseil bzw. die Zugseile mit der starren Stange zum Verstellen der Blende über die Eintrittsöffnung verbunden ist bzw. sind.
  4. Filteranordnung nach Anspruch 3, weiterhin aufweisend ein erstes Kabel (46) und ein zweites Kabel (48), die parallel und nahe der ersten und zweiten Seite der flexiblen Blende verlaufen, sowie eine Einrichtung zur gleitbeweglichen Verbindung der ersten und zweiten Seite und der Blende mit dem ersten und zweiten Kabel.
  5. Filteranordnung nach Anspruch 4, bei der die Einrichtung zur gleitbeweglichen Verbindung der ersten und zweiten Seite der Blende mit dem ersten und zweiten Kabel mehrere erste und zweite O-Ringe (50) aufweist, in die das erste und zweite Kabel eingreift und die auch In jeweilige mehrere erste und zweite Ösen (52) eingreifen, die an den Rändern der ersten und zweiten Seite ausgebildet sind.
  6. Filteranordnung nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, bei der die Blende aus einem Polyestermaterial hergestellt.
  7. Filteranordnung nach einem der einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 5, bei der die Blende aus einem Drahtgeflechtmaterial hergestellt ist.
  8. Filteranordnung nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, die außerdem eine mit dem unteren Ende der flexiblen Blende verbundene starre Stange aufweist.
  9. Filteranordnung nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, die außerdem einen mit der Struktur zur Befestigung des zweiten Endes des Zugseils verbindbaren Anker aufweist.
  10. Filteranordnung nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, die außerdem zwei flexible, im Behälter gelagerte Blenden aufweist.
  11. Filteranordnung nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, die außerdem mehrere Öffnungen aufweist, die im Boden des Behälters zum Ableiten von sich im Behälter ansammelnder Feuchtigkeit ausgebildet sind.
Anspruch[en]
  1. A filtering assembly for protecting an air intake opening (4) of an air intake system located on an external surface of a structure such as a cooling tower, a building louvre or an air handling unit, which filtering assembly is mounted in use to an external surface of the structure and comprises:
    • a flexible screen (12);
    • means for storing the screen attachable to the structure, which means comprises a container (62) positioned at the base or side of the structure, which container has a bottom and a pair of side walls defining an open interior for receiving the screen and having a lid (70) hingedly connected to one of the side walls, the lid being pivotable between an open and closed position so as to permit access to the interior of the container; and
    • means for advancing the flexible screen across the opening of the air intake system so as to raise the screen from within the container and cover the opening or to lower the screen into the container and uncover the opening, the means comprising at least one pulley (26) mountable to the structure adjacent to the air intake opening, the pulley receiving at least one pull rope (30), with a first end (34) of the pull rope connecting to the flexible screen and a second end (38) of the pull rope being actable upon to advance the screen.
  2. A filtering assembly according to Claim 1, wherein the at least one pulley comprises a pair of pulleys (26, 28) arranged at opposite ends of the air intake and a pair of pull ropes (30, 32) for engaging the pulleys to advance the screen.
  3. A filtering assembly according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein the flexible screen is of a generally rectangular shape having a top, a bottom, a first side and a second side, and further comprising a rigid elongated member (54) connected to the top of the flexible screen, the pull rope or ropes connecting to the rigid elongated member for advancing the screen across the intake opening.
  4. A filtering assembly according to Claim 3, further comprising a first cable (46) and a second cable (48) extending parallel and adjacent to the first side and second side of the flexible screen and means for slidably connecting the first and second sides of the screen to the first and second cables.
  5. A filtering assembly according to Claim 4, wherein the means for slidably connecting the first and second sides of the screen to the first and second cables comprises first and second pluralities of O-rings (50), the O-rings, being engaged by the first and second cables and also being engaged within respective first and second ) pluralities of eyelets (52) formed at the peripheries of the first and second sides.
  6. A filtering assembly according to any preceding claim, wherein the screen is constructed of a polyester material.
  7. A filtering assembly according to any one of Claims 1 to 5, wherein the screen is constructed of a wire mesh material.
  8. A filtering assembly according to any preceding claim, which further comprises a rigid elongated member connected to the bottom of the flexible screen.
  9. A filtering assembly according to any preceding claim, which further comprises a tie-down connectable to the structure for attaching the second end of the pull rope.
  10. A filtering assembly according to any preceding claim, which further comprises a pair of flexible screens stored within the container.
  11. A filtering assembly according to any preceding claim, which further comprises a plurality of holes formed in the bottom of the container to drain moisture collecting within the container.

  1. Ensemble de filtration pour la protection d'une ouverture d'admission d'air(4) d'un système d'entrée d'air disposée sur une surface extérieure d'une structure telle qu'une tour de refroidissement, un abat-vent de bâtiment ou une unité de traitement d'air, lequel ensemble de filtration est monté pour son utilisation sur une surface externe de la structure et comprend :

    • un moyen pour faire avancer l'écran souple à travers l'ouverture du système d'entrée d'air de façon à soulever l'écran de l'intérieur du conteneur et recouvrir l'ouverture, ou de façon à abaisser l'écran à l'intérieur du conteneur et découvrir l'ouverture, le moyen comprenant au moins une poulie(26) pouvant être montée sur la structure au voisinage de l'ouverture d'entrée d'air, la poulie recevant au moins une corde de traction(30), une première extrémité(34) de la corde de traction étant reliée à l'écran souple et une seconde extrémité(38) de la corde de traction pouvant être actionnée à la demande pour faire avancer l'écran.

Ensemble de filtration selon la revendication 1 ou 2, dans lequel l'écran souple a une forme généralement rectangulaire comportant un sommet, une base, un premier côté et un second côté, et comprenant en outre un élément allongé rigide(54) relié au sommet de l'écran souple, la ou les cordes de traction étant reliées à l'élément rigide allongé pour faire avancer l'écran au travers de l'ouverture d'entrée.
  4. Ensemble de filtration selon la revendication 3, comprenant en outre un premier câble(46) et un second câble(48) s'étendant parallèlement et adjacents au premier et au second côtés de l'écran souple et un moyen pour relier le premier et le second côtés de l'écran de façon coulissante au premier et au second câbles.
  5. Ensemble de filtration selon la revendication 4, dans lequel le moyen pour relier de façon coulissante le premier et le second côtés de l'écran au premier et au second câbles comprend une première et une seconde pluralités de bagues en O(50), les bagues en O, étant en prise avec le premier et le second câbles et étant également en prise à l'intérieur d'une première et d'une seconde pluralités respectivement d'oeillets(52) formés sur les périphéries du premier et du second côtés.
  6. Ensemble de filtration selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, dans lequel l'écran est construit en un matériau de polyester.
  7. Ensemble de filtration selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 5, dans lequel l'écran est construit en un matériau à mailles métalliques.
  8. Ensemble de filtration selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, comprenant en outre un élément allongé rigide relié à la base de l'écran souple.
  9. Ensemble de filtration selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, comprenant en outre un organe d'immobilisation pouvant être relié à la structure pour fixer la seconde extrémité de la corde de traction.
  10. Ensemble de filtration selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, comprenant en outre une paire d'écrans souples stockés à l'intérieur du conteneur.
  11. Ensemble de filtration selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, comprenant en outre une pluralité de trous formés dans le fond du conteneur pour collecter l'humidité drainée à l'intérieur du conteneur.
